SUMMER EVENTS AT MAPLE HOUSE
FAMILY FARM VACATIONS
Feeding animals, picking fresh vegetables and berries to eat, swimming, boating, or tubing in a private lake, stargazing, biking, hiking and maybe a horse-drawn wagon ride can make for a different, relaxing family vacation. For a group of 8 or more we are happy to provide any lunches, dinners and evening BBQs or campfires you might like. Tie in a trip to Shelburne Falls to see glass blowing, pottery making, glacial potholes, crafts and the famous Bridge of Flowers.
SUMMER ON THE POND
Follow Maple House trails to the Rowe Town Forest and relax in the gentle breezes wafting over the beach at Pelham Lake. Swim, bird watch, canoe, kayak, or just laze in the sun gazing at Todd and Adams Mountains across the lake. Tennis courts, volleyball court, and a basketball court as well as 10 miles of hiking trails can help burn off Maple Houses filling homegrown breakfasts.
FLY-FISHING IN THE DEERFIELD RIVER
Well hook you up with Jack Smola, fly-fishing guide for the Deerfield River. He is a lot of fun and guarantees youll hook a fish every trip. We can attest to his skill, teaching ability, and great personality. The fish taste great too! Well fry your catch up for dinner!
WHITE WATER PLAY IN the DEERFIELD RIVER
Whether you want to try white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking or floating in a "fun yak", the rafting companies on the Deerfield River can have you outfitted and on the water in no time. Check into Zoar Outdoor Adventure, Crab Apple Whitewater or Wilderness Plus and enjoy some white water play while you stay with us.
MOHAWK TRAIL CONCERTS
On Friday and Saturday nights in July and August enjoy some of the best chamber and ensemble music in the historic Federated Church of Charlemont on the Mohawk Trail. The church has wonderful acoustics and seats only 200. Youll feel as if you are in a front row seat no matter where you sit! Well prepare a picnic dinner for you to enjoy in our gardens or by Pelham Lake before the concert if you like, just give us a little notice.
FARM AND GARDEN TOUR
The Franklin Land Trust hosts a wonderful farm and garden tour of 6-8 working farms and/or perennial gardens around the hill towns the last weekend in June. Its a great time to get some ideas for your garden and to have your kids see a variety of animals. Plus, youll be staying on a small farm with beautiful gardens yourself! Proceeds go to keeping farm land in Franklin County.
OLD DEERFIELD CRAFT FAIR
Considered one of the best juried craft fairs in New England, Old Deerfield Craft Fair has just about anything you could imagine. Usually the third weekend in June, and repeated the third weekend in September.
ROWE OLD HOME DAY
Saturday July 14, 2001 is Rowe Old Home Day. Parade, chicken BBQ, crafters display, live music at the lake, trolley tour of town, garden tours, auction, and fire works round out the day. Free admission.
BRIDGE OF FLOWERS ROAD RACE
Want to race with Bill Rodgers? Tired of the crowds at the Falmouth Road Race? Heres a classic 10K race through the hills of Shelburne Falls that will challenge the best racer. Bills been known to race it- why not you? Saturday in August. Spaghetti supper Friday night free for all racers. Return to Maple House for a refreshing dip in Pelham Lake after the race.
HEATH AGRICULTURAL FAIR
This wonderful fair on the third weekend of August every year lets you experience small-town agriculture at its best. Watch horse and ox-draws, sheep judging, a horse show, ox parade and much more. Visit the animal barns and see centuries old breeds. In the exhibition hall view gardening, food, and handicrafts entered by local folks vying for first, second and third prize ribbons. Dance to folk, rock, and blue-grass music. Sample a wonderful chicken BBQ lunch put on by the volunteer fire department. Saturday night they clean out the cow barn for a good old-fashioned square dance. The night is topped of with fireworks.
ROWE TOWN TAG SALE
Labor Day Weekend provides an opportunity to pick up a map for a self-guided driving tour of Rowes roads, all designated "scenic byways", passing historic homes and sites. Stop to browse 10-12 tag sale and craft tables. You will find unique gifts and might just get all your Christmas shopping done early.
HILLTOWN FALL FESTIVALS AND FAIRS
Harvest season means fall festivals. Every weekend in September and early October at least one of the hill towns has their fall fair. Sample local cooking, try your hand at pumpkin bowling, see the animals, view local crafts. Shop til you drop. Well draw you the map to get there.
DINNER BY THE FIRE
Off the back of the house is a beautiful screen and glass enclosed private porch with an antique brick oven fireplace. Its a great place to view the stars or relax after biking, hiking or skiing. For groups of 8 or more well fire up the brick oven and bake you a tasty dinner if you like.
