Cross Country
Ski To Vermont:
This trail starts at Peters Store or off of Number Nine Road and follows a snow mobile trail up into a beautiful field in Vermont. We turn around there, but you can certainly go further. It begins about 3 miles from here. Head to the top of our hill and take a right onto Ford Hill Road. Turn right and go to the end. Take a right onto Leshure Road and then a quick left onto Cyrus Stage Road. Go to the end. Take a right on Number Nine Road and go about 1/2 mile and park under the high tension wires. Take the high tension road to the right and the trial goes off to the left about a 1/2 of a mile in. This is a lovely, gently rolling trail through forest and past some small beaver ponds. It goes through an old farm where you can see the cellar holes. After the first little field at this old farm, it turns left onto the old road for that farm, passes a marsh and then turns right again to head to Vermont. It is well marked and groomed by the snow mobile club. There is a sign on a tree letting you know that you have made it to Vermont. To start at Peters store, turn right onto Number Nine Road and go about 3 miles to Peters Store. You may leave your car there and pick up the trail behind the store. Take the trail to the left.
Colrain State Forest:
This has a gradual climb out and a nice easy ski back. There is a big hill down right at the start that is definitely intermediate to advanced skiing. You can ski straight out the forest road to a town road at the end and then ski back- probably about 3-4 miles each way -by taking the right fork after the first bridge at the bottom of the big hill. Or you can make a loop by taking the left fork and then turning back right when you hit the forest road again. The forest is about 6 miles from here. To get to the forest, go to the top of our hill and turn right onto Ford Hill Road. Go to the end and take a right onto Leshure Road and then a quick left onto Cyrus Stage Road. Go to the end to Number Nine Road, and take a right. Go to the end and take a left onto Rte. 8A. Follow 8A around a curve left, then right, then left, past the turn off for Colrain. Then take the first right onto State Farm Road. This is actually the old road you will be skiing on. It is plowed down a short distance to a parking area where you begin.
